BURNABY, B.C. — The British Columbia coroner presiding over the inquest into the death of Myles Gray says the jury won’t be allowed to see a photo of the man’s injuries because the application was made too late. Coroner Larry Marzinzik says his view on admitting photos would have been “very different” had the lawyer for Gray’s family, Ian Donaldson, brought it up earlier.Gray, who was 33 years old, died in August 2015 after a beating by police that left him with injuries including ruptured testicles and fractures in his eye socket, nose, voice box and rib.The 10-day inquest is expected to finish today, and there was no application for photos to be admitted before testimony from officers involved in the struggle to restrain Gray or first responders who tried to revive him. Marzinzik says there is no longer an opportunity for witnesses to provide context of the photo to the jury, and evidence of the injuries Gray sustained have been well-documented throug...

The online bakery ito Desserts and Gifts, based in the Henry Farm community near Don Mills Road and Sheppard Avenue East, offers a combination of French and Japanese pastries. The mini cake business was started by husband and wife duo, Fangchen Huang and Nami Tamai, because they noticed a gap in this market when it came to patisserie-grade mini cakes. The name ‘Ito’ comes from the Japanese word ‘thread’ and they are hoping to thread these treats into the community.“We were working from home during COVID times and remember complaining to Nami that I really missed the snacks and tea from the office and I wish I could have the same at home,” says Huang.“So Nami got to work, she developed and tested recipes that could endure being frozen in the freezer for months and we leveraged the very powerful shock, frozen freezer to achieve the best results.”Tamai is no stranger to making these sweet treats. She was a pastry chef for over 10 years, starting ...

Highest-rated restaurants for tacos in Chicago, according to Yelp

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:12:04 GMT

Depending on who you ask, tacos are more than just a quick snack you can grab off a truck for lunch. They're an experience. One that allows the chef to layer flavor and textures—from the fresh crunch of the cilantro and onions to the smoked heat of roasted chiles cavorting with the savory delight of your protein of choice—all onto one delicious tortilla, freshly crisped over an open flame…sorry is anyone else hungry?Much like the food, the origin story has a fairly layered history. Both Mayan and Aztec civilizations were said to have eaten a food similar to what we know as a taco, but the modern iteration traces back to the 1800s in Mexico. Born of a need to ensure that miners had a means to easily consume hearty food while on the job, piles of meat would be rolled into corn tortillas and packed for the road. During hours upon hours of hard labor in horrible conditions, the ability to pull out a few taquitos (named for the gunpowder role the miners carried with them) was practically...

Texas Capitol grounds could feature statue of woman, fetus

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The monuments surrounding the Texas Capitol could include one honoring the anti-abortion movement after the Senate advanced legislation this week to get that process started.Senate Concurrent Resolution 24, introduced by Republican Sen. Tan Parker of Flower Mound, passed the chamber Tuesday by a vote of 20-10. The proposal calls for installing a replica of The National Life Monument created by Canadian sculptor Tim Schmalz, which depicts a woman with a fetus in her womb. "A replica of the monument on the Capitol grounds would provide a communal place for Texans to celebrate the beauty of human life," the resolution reads. The measure does not guarantee that this monument will be placed somewhere on the north Capitol grounds, but it does direct the State Preservation Board to start looking at plans and collecting private donations. During a phone interview with KXAN Friday, Schmalz called it "excellent news" to hear that state lawmakers are seeking to add the bronze m...
