ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WSVN) — There was a birthday party surprise for a woman who was attacked by a shark. She didn’t even see the shark in the water, and now, she’s just thankful to be alive and able to tell her story.About 2-3 miles out from the St. Petersburg pier, near Tampa Saturday night, Natalie Branda swam in the water as she celebrated her friend Allie Muck’s birthday.“I remember trying to attach two floaties together, and then I accidentally dropped one and splashed the water,” Branda said. She didn’t see what happened next, but felt it. “I just felt pressure and then it released, and I was like, ‘I got bit,’ and I swam the fastest I ever swam to the boat,” she said.“I think the look in their eyes kind of made us realize it was a little bit more serious than we were anticipating,” Mucks said. With her boyfriend by her side, Branda climbed a board the sailboat.“I could only see my stomach at t...

Don’t throw a spotlight on Northern Ireland stalemate, Sunak urged

DUBLIN – Rishi Sunak should postpone plans for an international investment conference in Northern Ireland because it will cast a counterproductive spotlight on its political paralysis, the U.K. prime minister has been warned.Sunak announced plans for the September 12-13 conference following his Windsor Framework agreement with the European Union. That painstakingly negotiated compromise was designed to minimize post-Brexit restrictions on British goods movements into Northern Ireland and reinforce the U.K. region’s unique access to the EU single market, a potential selling point for multinationals. While the deal ended years of Brexit headbutting between London and Brussels, it failed to persuade the Democratic Unionists – the main pro-British and pro-Brexit party in Northern Ireland – to end their boycott of local government at Stormont. With no prospect of a political breakthrough, the other parties in Northern Ireland’s mothballed coalition government are arguing that it ...

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The U.S. military is considering putting armed personnel on commercial ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, in what would be an unheard of action aimed at stopping Iran from seizing and harassing civilian vessels, four American officials told The Associated Press on Thursday. America didn’t even take the step during the so-called “Tanker War,” which culminated with the U.S. Navy and Iran fighting a one-day naval battle in 1988 that was the Navy’s largest since World War II. While officials offered few details of the plan, it comes as thousands of Marines and sailors on both the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan and the USS Carter Hall, a landing ship, are on their way to the Persian Gulf. Those Marines and sailors could provide the backbone for any armed guard mission in the strait, through which 20% of all the world’s crude oil passes.Iran’s mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comm...
