CAIRO (AP) — The head of Sudan’s army made a rare public speech Monday in his first tour outside of the capital since the conflict with a rival general erupted in mid-April.Sudan was plunged into chaos after monthslong tensions between the military, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, exploded into open fighting on April 15. In the eastern coastal city of Port Sudan, Burhan said a military operation that included naval and air forces enabled him to leave the capital’s army headquarters safely. Two people were killed in the operation, he said. The conflict has reduced the capital to an urban battlefield, with the RSF controlling vast swaths of the city. The military command, where Burhan has purportedly been stationed since April, has been one of the epicenters of the conflict, besieged by RSF forces.Burhan said no agreement had been reached “with the traitors or with any party outside of the Sudanese people” t...US eases past Greece 109-81 at Basketball World Cup to advance to the second round

DENVER (KDVR) -- While it may not seem like it with the Rockies record this year, it is scientifically easier to hit a home run at Coors Field. But it's not necessarily a home-field advantage. Like most phenomena in Denver, it has to do with the altitude of the Mile High City. Coors Field is known as an "easier field" because it hit a record-setting 303 home runs in 1999, according to the Colorado Rockies website. The Rockies estimated that a home run hit 400 feet in Yankee Stadium (sea-level) would travel as far as 440 feet in Denver. Rockies have lowest attendance in 10 years at regular home game CU Boulder looked into the physics of why it's easier to hit a home run at Coors Field. Peter Hamlington, associate professor in the Paul M. Rady Department of Mechanical Engineering, explains that it's because the atmospheric pressure is about 20% less than a park at sea level. With less air resistance, the ball can go further. "Baseballs do travel farther at Coors Field than at ...6 injured after BSO Fire Rescue helicopter crashes in Pompano Beach triplex

TAMPA, Fla. (WSVN) — As the Sunshine State gears up for the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Idalia, a new problem has emerged at the fuel pump, adding to the challenges faced by Florida residents preparing for the approaching storm. Officials are warning that regular fuel purchased after 10 a.m. on Saturday might have been cross-mixed with diesel, posing potential complications for vehicle owners. The issue stems from fuel supplied by CITGO from the Port of Tampa, according to statements from Florida authorities. Workers reportedly made an error, introducing diesel into tanks that were designated for regular gasoline. This mix-up could lead to engine problems for consumers who unwittingly filled their vehicles with the contaminated fuel. The timing of this fuel contamination problem couldn’t be worse, as many Floridians are making preparations, including evacuations, ahead of the looming Tropical Storm Idalia. The storm’s approach has prompted residents to fuel ...Poland launches probe as Legionella confirmed in city water supply

Legionella bacteria have been confirmed in the water supply system of the southeastern Polish city of Rzeszów, with the country’s counterintelligence agency ABW investigating whether the city is the target of deliberate contamination.Rzeszów is Poland’s main logistics hub for sending military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and a base for U.S. troops. The city has been the center of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in the country, with 11 deaths and 144 cases to date since mid-August. The deaths all involved people aged between 64 to 95 with pre-existing health problems.Four out of nine tested samples from Rzeszów’s water supply system confirmed the presence of legionella bacteria, which cause Legionnaires’ disease, the local sanitary and epidemiological service Sanepid said Monday. However, the source of the contamination is unclear.“At this moment, the received results … do not provide a basis to determine the potential source of infection,” it said in a statement. Authorities have officially closed their investigation into the death of a woman once dubbed the “Lady of the Dunes,” a year after DNA analysis allowed officials to identify the victim nearly 50 years after her body was found.Back on July 26, 1974, the body of Ruth Marie Terry was found on Race Point Beach in Provincetown, with authorities determining her cause of death was likely a blow to the head. However, Terry would go on to become the state’s oldest unidentified homicide victim as officials were unable to identify her at the time, with her body severely mutilated. She was also believed to have been killed several weeks prior to her discovery. But in October 2022, state and federal officials said that through DNA analysis, investigators were able to confirm Terry as the victim, allowing the FBI and others to further pursue leads, including one connecting her late husband to the case.Since last year, the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, Provincetown...Latest news
